RISK ASSESSMENT OF CRANE SUPPORT BEAM AT PORT FACILITY

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Scope:

  • Structural engineering assessment of a reinforced concrete beam supporting port cranes.

Complexity:

  • Complex load path due to the aspect ratio of the crane beam.

  • Complex load arrangement due to the live and wind loads applied on the crane runway.

  • Active deterioration of concrete.

  • Limited field test data.

  • Active Alkali Silica Reactivity (ASR).

Approach / Value

  • Beam capacity was assessed using nonlinear finite element (NFE) structural assessment.

  • Multiple load scenarios and crane locations were considered.

  • Field test data was incorporated in the capacity check.

  • The risk of operation was quantified by calculating the likelihood of failure and determining the associated consequence.

  • NOEL’s approach provided the client with a scientific numerically based decision-making tool.
