RISK ASSESSMENT OF CRANE SUPPORT BEAM AT PORT FACILITY
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Scope:
-
Structural engineering assessment of a reinforced concrete beam supporting port cranes.

Complexity:
-
Complex load path due to the aspect ratio of the crane beam.
-
Complex load arrangement due to the live and wind loads applied on the crane runway.
-
Active deterioration of concrete.
-
Limited field test data.
-
Active Alkali Silica Reactivity (ASR).

Approach / Value
-
Beam capacity was assessed using nonlinear finite element (NFE) structural assessment.
-
Multiple load scenarios and crane locations were considered.
-
Field test data was incorporated in the capacity check.
-
The risk of operation was quantified by calculating the likelihood of failure and determining the associated consequence.
-
NOEL’s approach provided the client with a scientific numerically based decision-making tool.
