SEISMIC ASSESSMENT OF 100-YEAR-OLD BUTTRESS CONCRETE DAM

Client: Confidential

Location: Nova Scotia

Scope:

  • Determine the risk of failure of the structural dam against seismic loads.

Complexity:

  • The structure experiences active deterioration of concrete integrity.

  • Seismic analysis requires considering the soil-structure interaction.

  • Smooth reinforcing bars were used with inadequate anchorage length.

Approach / Value

  • A nonlinear finite element model of the damaged structure was developed based on NDT and laser scanning of the structure.

  • Advanced structural analysis including nonlinear time-history analysis was performed to provide accurate results of the structural response.

  • A risk-based approach was utilized to represent the relationship between the likelihood and consequence of failure.

  • NOEL’s approach yielded an accurate representation of the risk of failure and assisted the client with informed decisions regarding repair versus replacement.
